Habakkuk Devotional – Week 3
Moving Forward from the Valley

DAY 1
Trusting God in Times of Waiting
Reading: Psalm 13

Devotional: Psalm 13 is a powerful expression of waiting and longing. David begins with a heartfelt cry, “How long, Lord?” It’s a question that resonates with many of us as we face prolonged challenges and wait for God’s intervention. This psalm captures the raw emotions of feeling forgotten or overwhelmed, yet it also demonstrates a profound trust in God’s steadfast love. As you read, take note of the transition that occurs within this short Psalm. David moves from a place of sorrow and questioning to a declaration of trust and praise. This shift is a reminder that even in times of waiting and uncertainty, we can choose to trust in God’s faithful love and salvation. Reflect on any areas in your life where you feel like you are in a period of waiting or uncertainty. What are your own “How long?” questions? Bring these before God honestly and openly. Remember, God welcomes your questions and concerns, just as He did with David and Habakkuk.

DAY 2
Remembering God’s Faithfulness
Reading: Psalm 77:11-20

Devotional: Habakkuk found strength by remembering God’s past deeds. Today’s passage from Psalms echoes this practice. When we’re facing difficult times, recalling God’s faithfulness in the past can bolster our faith for the present and future. Take a moment to list specific ways God has been faithful to you in the past. How might these memories encourage you in your current circumstances? Let these recollections fuel your trust in God’s ongoing work in your life.

DAY 3
Finding Joy in God Alone
Reading: Habakkuk 3:17-19

Devotional: Habakkuk’s declaration of joy, even in dire circumstances, is a powerful testament to finding our ultimate satisfaction in God. This passage challenges us to root our joy not in our circumstances, but in God Himself. Consider areas of your life where you’re allowing external factors to dictate your joy. How might your perspective shift if you chose to rejoice in God regardless of these circumstances? Pray for the strength to find your joy in God alone, trusting Him to be your strength and sure footing.

DAY 4
Seeing Beyond Our Troubles
Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Devotional: Paul’s words here echo Habakkuk’s transformation. Both learned to look beyond their immediate troubles to the eternal realities of God’s kingdom. Today, practice “fixing your eyes on what is unseen.” When facing challenges, try to view them through the lens of eternity. How might this eternal perspective change your approach to current difficulties? Ask God to renew you inwardly day by day, helping you to focus on the unseen realities of His kingdom.

DAY 5
Choosing Gratitude in All Circumstances
Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Devotional: The story of Martin Rinkart writing a hymn of thanksgiving amidst terrible suffering illustrates the power of choosing gratitude in all circumstances. Today’s passage encourages us to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances. This isn’t about denying our pain, but about recognizing God’s presence even in our darkest moments. What might it look like for you to practice gratitude today, especially in challenging areas of your life? Ask God to help you cultivate a heart of thanksgiving, trusting that He is working all things for good.
